Federal Officers Launch Immigration Operation in the City of Charlotte
Federal agents have descended on the Democratic-run city as part of the federal government's intensifying crackdown on unauthorized immigration, according to official statements.
The operation, called "The Charlotte Initiative", was revealed on recently, with authorities stating that "criminal illegal aliens" would be the focus in the urban area.
"We are surging immigration officers to Charlotte to maintain public safety and remove dangerous individuals," an official representative stated.
City authorities, including Charlotte's mayor, published a unified declaration condemning the campaign, saying it was causing "needless concern and instability" in the resident base.
Enforcement Measures
Specialized transport and elite units could be involved in the local enforcement action, according to official records.
Several church members doing yard work at a eastern Charlotte church escaped to nearby forest when authorities descended, with one man being apprehended, according to accounts.
"We thought church was safe and no incidents would occur," a teenage observer commented.
Political Context
Since the presidential term renewal, federal authorities have been sent to multiple cities including key American cities to implement the commitment of "the biggest immigration enforcement effort" in US history.
The DHS said they are carrying out the initiative because North Carolina has not honoured the approximately 1,400 Immigration and Customs Enforcement persons held, meaning they had been discharged due to "local regulations".
Local Designation
Charlotte is not a protective jurisdiction - municipalities that have regulations in place to limit the assistance given to government enforcement - but it is a "designated immigrant-friendly municipality". This is a official classification for urban centers that are committed to immigration inclusion.
"The administration and its leadership will act to safeguard Americans when municipal leaders refuse," representatives stated.
Population Background
The city is an culturally varied city, with about 17% of residents being foreign-born, according to demographic data.
DHS has not disclosed how long the enforcement actions will continue. Windy City enforcement, which started last fall is persisting.
Leadership Commentary
In recent days, US Representative and Democrat, Alma Adams said she was informed of the initiative and was "extremely concerned" about Border Patrol and ICE agents coming to the state.
The next city on Trump's list is set to be New Orleans, according to sources, and that as many as two hundred officers could be sent to the location.
Campaigns in previous cities like Chicago and Los Angeles have come under fire over concerns of excessive use of force.
