The green light was given to Hazlewood to link up with Australia's squad for the first Ashes Test following fitness concerns, however, teammate Sean Abbott has been ruled out

The two experienced hamstring issues playing for New South Wales in the Victoria clash in the Sheffield Shield this past Wednesday

Medical examinations revealed the 34-year-old Hazlewood escaped muscle damage. The uncapped Abbott, 33, sustained a "moderate grade" injury

Team captain Cummins is unavailable for the first Test, commencing later this month, therefore missing of another established pace bowler like Hazlewood might have represented a serious concern

Abbott would have been not expected to participate in Perth, as Hazlewood prepares to team up Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland forming the fast bowling unit

The captain, rehabilitating from spinal concerns, is expected to be scheduled to reappear during the next Test in Brisbane starting on 4 December

Batsman Steve Smith will captain the side in Cummins' absence

Similar to most Aussie squad members, Hazlewood is involved in ongoing fixtures of Sheffield Shield matches in preparation for the historic rivalry

Until this match, he hadn't featured red-ball cricket for New South Wales for over twelve months

He experienced stiffness in his leg muscle towards the end of the opposition's batting recently and was substituted for safety reasons

The two bowlers came out to bat during New South Wales' second innings during their defeat by 300 runs

"We're a week away until the Test matches - we consistently choose the side of caution," commented Cummins

"The medical staff sought to identify the nature of the problem before pushing it and potentially making the injury more severe"

"Uncommon to see him upbeat, making it encouraging observing his positive demeanor"

"He understands his physique really well. I think he was slightly anxious (and) wanted to get medical assessment"

Abbott has won 57 appearances representing Australia in limited-overs formats

The yet-to-debut Doggett represents additional pace options within the team, providing cover for Starc, Boland and Hazlewood
