The former personal attorney for Donald Trump has left her position as New Jersey's top federal prosecutor. This follows a judicial decision that questioned her right to serve.
Attorney General's Statement
US Attorney General, Pam Bondi, confirmed her stepping down on the start of the week. She commented that the appeals court finding made it impossible for her to perform her duties.
"But do not mistake following the order as giving up," Habba stated. "The effort will now reach across the nation."
Judicial Challenge
Her resignation was triggered by a US appeals court found that she had been acting without proper authority as the top prosecutor. This decision is likely to affect numerous prosecutions in the state.
The court declared that a temporary posting that bypassed the advice and consent of the Senate breached the federal law governing appointments.
Ongoing Legal Battle
It was also stated that the former prosecutor will remain at the justice department as a senior adviser. They intend to challenge the decision of the ruling, aiming for a different outcome.
On a social media platform, she contended that the court "must not override the executive's selection of lawyers responsible for performing the fundamental role of the presidency of criminal prosecution."
Performance in Office
Bondi commended the prosecutor's work and noted that during her run, the state capital of Newark saw a 20% reduction in criminal activity. It was also reported that the city of Camden recorded its first summer in 50 years with no murders.
Connection to Donald Trump
Habba, 41, first joined Donald Trump's lawyers in 2021. She went on to represented the former president in his hush-money trial in 2024, which resulted in his guilty verdict on dozens of charges of document fraud.
Earlier, assuming the federal prosecutor position, Donald Trump had stated he was appointing her as his White House advisor during his second administration, labeling the lawyer as "unwavering in her loyalty" and a relentless legal advocate.
