Student Society President-Elect Ousted Due to Conservative Activist Comments
The president-elect of the prestigious debating society has been ousted from office after losing a vote of confidence that came after his controversial online comments about the conservative activist.
The vote against the student leader reached the necessary super-majority to oust him from his position, according to an announcement from the society.
Disputed Comments
The controversy began after Mr Abaraonye reportedly shared messages on social media that seemed to welcome the killing of Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead while addressing a university in the United States.
According to sources, one social media message reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the phrase 'lol'.
The student leader is also reported to have written in a WhatsApp chat with other members seeming to express approval of the event.
Vote Outcome
The no-confidence motion was conducted over the recent days, with results revealed on this week.
Official notices showed that 1,228 ballots were cast supporting removal, while 501 were against the motion.
The notice confirmed that the president-elect was deemed to have resigned in accordance with the society's regulations.
Election Controversies
Proceedings were temporarily halted early on the previous day after the returning officer was allegedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from multiple individuals.
In a response, Mr Abaraonye claimed that the count had been stopped because electoral officials believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of process errors".
His response categorically refuted that any representative acting for George had participated in threatening or obstructive conduct.
Ongoing Dispute
The president-elect maintained that significant concerns had been submitted to the disciplinary committee and that he remained president-elect.
His statement added that he was "grateful and honored to have the backing of well in excess of a majority of students at Oxford" who supported a "secure voting process and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".
Opponents have argued that any failure to remove him would "signal to the world that the Oxford Union has chosen ideology over integrity".
External Reactions
On recently, Kirk's former chief of staff presented an open letter to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show broadcast.
The message criticized the society of becoming a place where "student leaders publicly celebrate the killing of a political opponent".
The statement indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to remain in post, supporters would "directly reach out to every American political speaker who has ever graced the union's chamber and advise them against future participation".
The Oxford Union had earlier criticized Mr Abaraonye's comments after the activist's killing and confirmed that complaints submitted about him had been referred for official review.
The president-elect had been one of several students to debate with the activist at the union in May.
