Teenager Found Dead Following Untrue Allegations of Stealing Ashes
One 14-year-old boy was found dead just days following being falsely blamed of taking the cremated remains of a deceased baby during a break-in, an inquest has learned.
Tragic Discovery
Kai Lloyd's mother and father found his body in his bedroom at his Connah's Quay home on 19 November 2021.
False Accusations Begin
The inquest learned how his mother got a communication on 8 November 2021 via social media, from a woman asking if Kai was her child. The message added: "Tell him thanks for breaking into my apartment."
In a testimony presented to the proceedings, the mother said the individual had been in the media, asserting her infant's remains had been stolen in a burglary - a allegation which was false.
Police Investigation
An official inquiry from police later determined the supposed break-in complainant had "provided false information" and "it now appears that the property was not stolen in the beginning".
News coverage about the alleged stolen ashes generated social media comments, and although Kai was not named in the messages, his parent said individuals "knew it was him".
The "online posts were really distressing", she said.
Mental Wellbeing Effect
She explained that her son had been identified with moderate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that condition, other individuals' opinions really were important to him.
"It would have affected him severely," she commented, "especially when this was untrue".
The teenager was arrested at home, but nothing was discovered. He was transported to a police station and later freed pending further inquiry.
Authorities said they would be in contact, the hearing learned, but had failed to reached out to the family by the moment of his death.
Withdrawal and Worry
His parent said Kai "withdrew into himself" after the arrest and "would keep asking me whether I had received anything from the authorities", because his ADHD meant sometimes "certain periods could seem like days".
When she spoke to him about the alleged incident, she said her son told her he had entered the residence because the woman who resided there had said he could utilize the toilet whenever he wanted, but denied taking anything.
Online Harassment
In a combined testimony between her and her husband, the mother said her child was being harassed online after the accusations.
The inquest learned that a young adult encouraged Kai to kill himself.
She had no concerns on the night before he passed away, describing how she had heard him "chuckling and teasing".
She described him as a "compassionate, loving" young man, and said her "relatives is totally devastated".
He had been "clearly concealing his worries", she said, noting that he could not stand to have anyone "have negative thoughts of him".
School Reaction
The hearing heard from school staff at Connah's Quay secondary school.
On November 8th, she "overheard some boys talking that the student had been arrested and that was the first I learned".
"He told me... he'd was innocent," she continued.
After the conversation, the staff member said she called Kai's parents' telephone and provided a voicemail saying she had spoken to the student about the accusations.
The proceedings learned his family said they did not receive that communication.
Formal Finding
Senior investigator told the hearing he would wait for reports regarding what improvements had been made to handling individuals with the condition, before deciding whether he should make a avoidance of subsequent deaths report.
Providing a descriptive conclusion, he stated: "Around November 8th, 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against the teenager, a young individual.
"Probably untruths were afterwards exaggerated and amplified through the medium of online networks.
"On 11 November, he was questioned by the police and following his interview he was freed while inquiries proceeded."
The official determined: "Exists no proof that the actions or failures of any organization caused or contributed to his passing and although it was the outcome of a self-inflicted action it is impossible to determine his purpose."
