The Mystery Within the Briefcase Henry Opens in Stranger Things?

For much of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned within a psychic prison constructed from the memories of Henry Creel. The search for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to experience a life-altering moment from Henry's youth—a moment that may just hold the means to overcome him once and for all.

Editor's Note: The following details significant events for *Stranger Things* season 5, volume 2.

A Journey Into the Tunnel

Upon meeting Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a chamber that Henry avoids at all costs. A clever observation a telescope found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. By aligning her view to the cut-out, she and Max tumble into a abandoned tunnel.

In this place, they observe a Henry as a boy come across an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man panics and shoots, wounding the boy in the hand. To protect himself, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. It was a factor, but the event went deeper than a fight for life.

Similar to other plot points of the final season, the truth about the events in the tunnel was first explored the stage play The First Shadow.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research

The play reveals the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a plane dubbed the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who returned in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker stole research materials to give to the Soviets, who were eager to begin their own interdimensional projects. The man in the tunnel is that employee.

So, What's in the Case?

Given what is known about his research, the case almost certainly contained vials of Captain Brenner's infected blood. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon handling the contents, leading to the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would later pass on to the kids in Hawkins Lab.

Another possibility, the box could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it maintains the stability of the parallel world. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, reappearing after half a day with a new blood type and personality. From then on, he fights the whispers of a sinister presence, similar to how Will Byers was influenced by the shadow monster in an earlier season.

The Power of Fear

Henry's enduring terror of that cave shows how deeply scarring the encounter was for him. Even as he controls the Hive Mind and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him remains. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a showdown between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his personal demons to fortify himself.

Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now understands what the monster's own weakness, which could provide a key upper hand in the series finale that awaits.
