The UK authorities has included an additional eleven more nations to its official alert list regarding the risks of toxic alcohol poisoning from adulterated alcoholic drinks.

The expanded advisory covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "an international surge in the incidence of confirmed occurrences" of methanol contamination.

Only recently, officials had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current roster, after multiple serious incidents including the tragic loss of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being cautions that as little as tiny quantities of industrial alcohol can result in vision loss or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hours.

Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Employed?

Toxic alcohol is a toxic industrial alcohol commonly used in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and thinner. It is not meant for human consumption.

Although it is naturally produced during the production of spirits, reputable manufacturers bring it down to minimal, harmless amounts for human consumption through the refining procedure.

Yet in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into beverages to save money, and as it is flavorless and smell-free, it is extremely challenging to notice.

Government Guidance for Tourists

Authorities representative Hamish Falconer emphasized that every traveler should be aware of the symptoms of industrial alcohol poisoning.

"While having drinks overseas, choose reputable establishments and steer clear of homemade alcohol or free shots," the minister said.

"In case something feels off, like a headache that's way worse than typical or vision problems – contact a doctor immediately."

The complete register of destinations noted as carrying a threat of methanol contamination currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
